This roast is cut from the round primal of the cow. A region that is made up of muscles that the cow uses for movement every day. Because this is cut is a larger muscle it needs to be slow cooked to yield tenderness. The sirloin tip roast when cooked properly can be a lean and tender portion of beef. How to cook the perfect Sirloin Tip Roast

Step One

To start, you will want to thaw the roast so that it is ready to season. If you keep a freezer full of beef, make it a habit to pull a few different cut options out at the beginning of the week so that you can have some healthy meals. You can thaw the roast in the refrigerator or on the counter top wrapped up in a towel.

I have found that the secret to keeping a freezer full of meat and actually using the meat is by thawing a few different options every week. This will ensure you cook the different cuts and try new and healthy recipes.

Step Two

Now it is time to season the roast. I love putting seasonings together to create the perfect blend of flavors. For this roast I used thyme, cardamom, and cumin. Add in some salt and pepper and blend it all with some olive oil so that it'll stick to the roast.

Cardamom seasoning is a newer one for me in the spice cabinet but it is quickly becoming one of my favorites to use. Cardamom is a minty and spicy flavor that is derived from the ginger family. It boast a complex and aromatic flavor. Depending on the direction you want to take your dish you can pair with other bold spices to produce a sweet or savory taste. I decided to to pair it with cumin for a savory flavor perfect for this roast.

Here are some other great seasoning options that pair well together and create this same savory flavor:

  • coriander
  • basil
  • cayenne pepper
  • garlic
  • paprika
  • oregano
  • parsley
  • rosemary

This is why I love spices and seasonings so much. There are so many different options and once you start to learn what flavors each bring to the dish, the options are truly endless.

Be sure to apply your olive oil and seasoning blend evenly to both sides of the roast.

Step Three

When cooking a roast it is important to cook slow to yield tenderness and flavor. Start by cooking the roast for about fifteen minutes on 425 to get the initial browning on both sides. Then, reduce the oven temperature to 350 degrees and finish cooking for about forty- five minutes or until it reaches desired doneness.

Kitchen Essentials for cooking a roast

Making the perfect roast in the oven is pretty easy and requires very few kitchen essentials. Be sure to read my guide here for keeping the right essentials on hand when you keep a freezer full of meat. For this recipe you really just need a good baking dish for the oven. A meat thermometer is also very handy for checking doneness. You can certainly do without but I would add one to your shopping list for future use.

This is the guide I use when cooking my roast:

  • Rare- cool red center. Meat temperature 125-130 degrees F.
  • Medium rare- cool red center. 135- 140 degrees F.
  • Medium- warm pink center. 145 degrees F.
  • Medium well- slightly pink center. 150 degrees F.
  • Well done- little or no pink. 160 degrees F.

What to serve with the Sirloin Tip Roast

A roast is most commonly served in the fall time along with slow cooked vegetables. Nothing beats a roast, potatoes, and some carrots going in the crock pot all day on a crisp, fall day. That imagery just got me excited for October and it's only July. I put a summer spin on this recipe though and served it up with some fresh vegetables instead.
